Code Of Ethics and Conduct - Web Things

Web Things have written and developed a code of ethics, conduct and business principles, which they adhere to, as a trading entity and / or individuals within Web Things, when providing any advise or any of their professional services, whether under contract or not, to a client, potential client or any third party.

The term Web Things refers to Web Things as a trading entity and also individuals working and employed within that trading entity.

These principles are in addition to those codes of ethics and conduct which Web Things, or individuals within Web Things, must adhere to as members of any professional body or organisation they are affiliated to.

The details of these principles are detailed below.

Web Things shall conduct its professional activities without discrimination against clients or potential clients, recognise basic human rights and endeavour to avoid actions that have an adverse effect on such rights.

Web Things shall perform professional work that meets the requirements, in full, of their clients and draw the client's attention to the consequences of ignoring Web Things professional judgement.

Web Things protect the reputation of their professional industry and strive to improve professional standards through participation in their development, use and regulation and avoid actions that will adversely affect the good standing of their profession and industry.

Web Things shall strive to advance public knowledge and appreciation of informatics and, wherever possible, counter false or misleading statements, information or actions detrimental to the profession or industry.

Web Things shall avoid any situation that my give rise to a conflict of interest between themselves and a client or potential client, or between clients or potential clients, and shall make full and immediate disclosure to that client or potential client if any conflict is likely to occur or be seen by a third party as likely to occur.

Web Things shall treat all information, data, text, images etc., provided to them by a client or potential client as confidential and shall not disclose or authorise to be disclosed, or use for personal gain or to benefit a third party, confidential information except with the permission of the relevant client or potential client or by the order of a court of law.

Web Things shall recognise the rights of individuals and groups to information privacy.

Web Things shall ensure that within its professional role, shall have regard for the public health, safety and environment. This is a general responsibility which may be governed by legislation, convention or protocol.

Web Things shall ensure that with their professional fields they have knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, regulations and standards, and that they comply with such requirements.

Web Things shall reject and shall not make any offer of bribery or inducement.

Web Things will not intentionally do harm to a client or a clients website or online standing through the use of any technology or procedure (without due, appropriate and relevant care), that is known to result in the removal of websites from search engine indexes / directories or rendered inoperable. Questionable adherence to standards must be addressed via the Robots Exclusion Standard.

Web Things will not intentionally violate any specifically published and enforced rules and guidelines of any search engines or directories. Should these change, Web Things shall will take appropriate action to comply with all changes as they apply to all of its clients. Where rules and guidelines are ambiguous or unclear, Web Things will seek clarification, without delay, and await approval from the appropriate search engine or directory.

Web Things shall continuously seek to upgrade and update their professional knowledge and skill, and shall maintain awareness of technological developments, procedures, standards and guidelines which are relevant to their respective professional fields.

Web Things shall not claim or imply to have any level of competence that they do not possess. They shall only offer to do work or provide a service that is within their professional competence.

Web Things will not misrepresent their own abilities, education, qualifications, training, standards of performance, certifications, trade group affiliations, technical inventory, or experiences to others. This includes quantifiable statements related to project timetables, performance history, company resources (staff, equipment, and proprietary products), and client lists. Guarantees will be restricted to items over which Web Things has significant and reasonable control.

Web Things will not intentionally mislead, harm, or offend a client, potential client or individual through its SEO strategies. Any individuals utilising a search engine to visit a website will not be misled by the information presented to or by the search engine, or harmed or offended upon arrival at the clients website.

Web Things will inform its clients or potential clients of the use or intended use of open source or free software, for that clients or potential clients project, and ensure that all user licence conditions are adhered to in full with a copy of the appropriate licence given to the client or potential client.

Web Things will not intentionally violate any laws. This involves the deliberate and continued violation of copyright, trademark, servicemark, or laws related to spamming as they may exist at national or international level.

Web Things when negotiating contracts or maintenance agreements with clients or potential clients, shall negotiate achievable service levels at realistic prices.

Web Things will not falsely represent the content of a clients website. This includes the practice of presenting different versions of web pages to different users except where that information is altered solely to meet browser specifications and needs, sensitivity to regional factors such as language, or product specific needs. In general, ALL requests for a specific URL should be served identical HTML by the web server.

Web Things shall ensure that all its website design and website development work is carried out, in full, using valid code as per the W3C’s required standards, and is completely search engine friendly as per current standards.

Web Things will not falsely represent others work as their own. This includes the taking of work from others in whole or in part and representing this work as their own. Web Things shall not make verbatim copies of the work of others (instead of authoring original work) without the prior consent of the other party.

Web Things will not set unreasonable client expectations.

Web Things will work to their best ability to increase or retain the rankings of client sites.

Web Things shall not use open source, free or other online templates to create a website on behalf of a client, unless expressly requested or agreed in advance by the client. The cost charged to the client should reflect this and all licence requirements should be strictly adhered to and a copy of the relevant licence provided to the client.
